Japanese Department Q&A

  • What is Nagoya like?

  • A friend of mine who studied Japanese in Japan told me that there were very few opportunities to speak Japanese outside the classroom, so he could not improve his Japanese very much.
  • I hear the cost of living is very high in Japan. I’m worried about living in such an expensive country.

Q1
What is Nagoya like?
Nagoya is located in the center of Japan and is an important link between Tokyo and Osaka. It has a mild climate and an advanced public transportation system. The cost of living is cheaper than Tokyo or Osaka. Nagoya can provide an excellent living and study environment.
Q2
Where is the school and what facilities are available?
The campus is situated in a convenient location. Nagoya Station, a major access point for both domestic and international travel, is 5 minutes away and the nearest subway station, Kokusai Center Station, is nearby. The downtown business and entertainment district, Sakae, is a 5 minute subway ride away. Also, the campus can be accessed through the underground shopping arcade when inclement weather makes walking above ground undesirable. The facilities on campus include a Language Laboratory Room, Internet Room, and Library. These facilities and others provide students with the ideal environment to pursue their studies.
Q3
A friend of mine who studied Japanese in Japan told me that there were very few opportunities to speak Japanese outside the classroom, so he could not improve his Japanese very much.
Trident has two colleges at the same location: “Languages & Hotel” and “Beauty & Bridal”. Besides foreign students, there are many Japanese students studying at these two colleges. There are also many exchange activities between foreign students and Japanese students, such as school events, joint classes, etc. Additionally, students from various countries as well as Japanese students live in our designated dormitories. There are many opportunities to learn Japanese in daily life.
Q4

Despite being a big city, the cost of living in Nagoya is lower than that of other big cities in Japan. In general, rent is low. For example, a one-room apartment with a bathroom costs from 40,000 yen to 60,000 yen in the city center near the school.
